Nickerie & Bigi Pan
Nieuw Nickerie is the capital of Nickerie, the North East district of Suriname. It has the status of the second city with its approximate 12.000 inhabitants. Large numbers of padi (rice) are exported from the Nickerie harbor. Hence the many rice companies, which are situated in this district. The Bigi Pan Nature Reserve is also in this area, a multipurpose reserve covered mainly with Mangrove forest.
Due to the many coastal birds, eagles and other smaller species of birds this reserve is popular for birdwatchers. Bigi Pan is a must for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Itinerary 2 day Nickerie tour
Early morning departure by bus from Paramaribo to Nickerie. For your convenience a few stops are made along the way. The first stop en route is at Groningen, capital of the district Saramacca. After a small snack and coffee break the bus tour continues to the next stop, a small fisherman's village called Boskamp followed by a stop in the district Coronie, known for its many coconut trees. Around noon lunch will be consumed at the local Chinese restaurant. After the lunch-break Wageningen, Henarpolder and the banana plantation are part of the passing scenery entering the district Nickerie. Check in at hotel. Short break. Visit to the Sea Wall and a Hindu temple. In the evening you can relax and spend your time freely.
After breakfast you will embark on a four hour boat trip to the 25.000 ha Bigi Pan Nature Reserve. Due to the many numbers of fresh water fish this reserve is a hibernation spot for birds of North America and Canada. The scarlet ibis can be seen from November to half May. Lunch is served on one of the fisherman houses on stilts. After this trip the tour returns by bus to Paramaribo with a short stop in Wageningen.
